Can people choose to become the children of God through an exercise of their own free will and volition?

John 1:12 – But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the children of God.

Romans 8:14 & 16 – 14. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God… 16. The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

Galatians 3:26 – For ye are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Al-Ma'idah 5:18 – The Jews and the Christians say: “We are the sons of Allah, and His loved ones.” Say: “Why then does He chastise you for your sins? Surely you are but mortals of His creating.
